I'm looking for a chiller for my 72g tank. That time of year and I'm sure everyone else is looking to but I thought I would ask first......LOL.
Let me know of ideas on building one if none are for sale.
Thank's

Why do you need a chiller ? Your tank should be around 80-82 and peak as high as 84-86 ! Unless you got a ton of haildes or next to a direct sunlight window a chiller is not needed !

If it's the Haildes then try a fan, and blow it accross the top where the Lights are and you should be fine.

Fans should be the only thing you really need.

why is the reason for the chiller

i have a chiller that i use

A few people have them ,but usually you do not need them .
Some people buy chillers because they try to keep their tanks around 76 deg. which is not the temp you should be at !
You could get by without one,but already have one so you might as well use it !

I was at the point of getting into SPS' so I wanted to keep the tank at a stable temp. Right now it flux's between 76 and 84 depending on the day. It's not by a window or exteror wall. I just read that you should keep it at a temp and not to flux mor than 2 to 3 deg. That's what I read, wheather it's true or not I don't know.... lol

that is the reason i have a chiller (mine even runs in the winter)

i am running from 79.1 to 80

but when i get my dc8 back depending on the month the temp will be from 76-82 and i will let the temp drift .5 degree

this is a personal preference i have seen tanks that have temp swing but i wouldnt suggest anything over 4 degrees in a day

If you have th extra cash go for it,but I have seen a lot of very awesome sps tanks without a chiller and like like lonnie suggested use cooling fans by your lights if needed. Most tanks have a 3-5 deg. temp swing and most all sps can handle that shift. I just think that kind of $ can be used in better places, but whatever works for you.

I appreciate the responce, that is why I listed the question. I don't know alot about the hobbie but I read most everything I can so I will keep up on my tank. I am going to try SPS' and see what happens. If I can get by with out a chiller I will. I am running 4 VHO's, no haildes as of yet.

montipora

i would say is the most forgiving

also the tricolor nana (very common)

if you want to try a tricolor i have one you can have

Do you have a heater on it? Why is it going so low? If you set the heater so it never goes below 80, then you won't have more than a 4 degree change.

I have a jbj arctica 1/10 hp that is one year old that would be perfect for 72. I use it on 190 gl total water and it does great. I had a Unico system installed so I wont need it any more. $300
