Why do you need a chiller ? Your tank should be around 80-82 and peak as high as 84-86 ! Unless you got a ton of haildes or next to a direct sunlight window a chiller is not needed !

A few people have them ,but usually you do not need them .
Some people buy chillers because they try to keep their tanks around 76 deg. which is not the temp you should be at !
You could get by without one,but already have one so you might as well use it !

I was at the point of getting into SPS' so I wanted to keep the tank at a stable temp. Right now it flux's between 76 and 84 depending on the day. It's not by a window or exteror wall. I just read that you should keep it at a temp and not to flux mor than 2 to 3 deg. That's what I read, wheather it's true or not I don't know.... lol

i am running from 79.1 to 80
but when i get my dc8 back depending on the month the temp will be from 76-82 and i will let the temp drift .5 degree
this is a personal preference i have seen tanks that have temp swing but i wouldnt suggest anything over 4 degrees in a day

If you have th extra cash go for it,but I have seen a lot of very awesome sps tanks without a chiller and like like lonnie suggested use cooling fans by your lights if needed. Most tanks have a 3-5 deg. temp swing and most all sps can handle that shift. I just think that kind of $ can be used in better places,but whatever works for you.

I appreciate the responce, that is why I listed the question. I don't know alot about the hobbie but I read most everything I can so I will keep up on my tank. I am going to try SPS' and see what happens. If I can get by with out a chiller I will. I am running 4 VHO's, no haildes as of yet.

Really . I run a heater/chiller combo myself . I like to keep my tank between 80 and 83

Definately montipora as farmer said ! Green slimers seem to be easy as well !

sps dont like a lot of change but they are not hard to keep as most people make them out to be
