Choosing coral placement

What is the best way to decide on coral placement in a small tank, as the corals grow i would like to allow the corals to grow quite dense.

However as they grow space is going to become quite limited. Is their anyway you can tell if they will fight and kill each other or be able to grow next to each other?

i try to keep mine spaced with about 3 inches of space in diameter around the coral so it has room to grow and not grow into another coral...but my tank is a 20g high and i will be trimming a decent amount to make the corals fit nicely and decently close but atleast want to leave about 3 inches in diameter in all directions just incase it decides to grow more dense.
