Chromis Deaths...

I COULDNT RESIST! THEY WERE SO CUTE AND COOL SWIMMING TOGETHER IN A SCHOOL!

I bought 4 green chromis for my tank...everything was fine for about a week, until one morning...

I turned on the lights as usual, only to find on of my chromis' had a huge gash on its side. It looked like something had scraped it. The scar had scraped off some scales and it was a pinkish/red color...the fish was fine, swimming like nothing was wrong, but i was worried and knew something was, in fact, wrong.

The next day, i woke up only to find 3 chromis' left:( ...it dissappeared...O well, the 3 still looked good together...

About 2-3 days later...I find ANOTHER on of my chromis has the same exact gash on its side, same pinkish color, same swimming like nothing was wrong...now i was scared...

Next day...2 chromis left...no sign of the gashed chromis

Came home from school, found my 3rd chromis stuck to my overflow, still alive though...took it off, swam to the bottom...i left my room...came back up...no sign of 3rd chromis...

Its been 2 weeks since this freakish incident, and my 4th chromis is very happy and thriving. I am worried that this will happen to my last chromis...

What could have caused my 3 chromis' to die? Can anyone help me:confused:

Lucas:(

what other fish are in there?
Are there any pumps exposed to the fish?

Did you see any brusing on the sides of the fish?

I have a foxface, 2 kauderns cardinals, 2 clownfish, and a hector goby. One pump is exposed to the fish, but it is so small i have had no problems. And what do you mean by "brushing"

I dont think the remaining one is a murderer.....

This thread should be called MURDEROUS CHROMIS! I have heard it before, and recently lived it myself. I started out with six, one by one, natural selection began. Over a period of a few weeks, they picked and squabbled until there were just two. These two chromis are now happily thriving in the tank.

After shipping it is common for these guys to get, what looks like brusing (redish patch on the side of there body). I find even with treating them i still get some deaths.
I think it is caused by an increase in NH3 in the bags.

I have had this happen as well. 5,4,3,2,1 effect. So far have just chalked it up to some observed clownfish aggression.

I have 2 left out of 9, and one is a bastard to the other, who just happens to be quick enough. He does hide a lot though.

Same..had 4..2 Big..2 Smaller. The 2 big guys beat the living snot out of the 2 smaller ones until they died. Now the 2 big ones fight with each other but they both appear to hold their own ground..and I thought these guys were peaceful..hah!

Chromis will start off in a school and eventually kill off all of the "weaker ones" until the dominant pair is all that remains. It is natural and happens all the time.

me to.. had 3 now one lol.. the rremaining one is a PITA, he beat up my female flame wrasse when i introduced the flame pair. for 2 days he would chase her around and the male flame took a little longer to acclimate. Once he came out of his "i wanna lay on the bottom and watch everything you do until i feel like swiming" mood, he let the chromis have it, and the aggression stopped right after.. never mess with a male flame wrasse's woman :)

I've had 4 in my 200g FO for about 8 months now, and they appear fine. One large, one medium, two small. The large is (naturally) dominant, but I haven't really witnessed much aggression.

I've enjoyed their behaviour so much I was considering adding another 4, but having read some of these comments I'm not so sure...

The reason chromis die is from not getting enough food. With proper food input they will stay happy and fat to fight off disease and feel stronger on a full stomache. When they get picked on they will loose courage to fight back, and eat less. If they refuse to eat, they are on their way to death.

Chromis are planktivores. They love mysid shrimp, and espcially Cyclop eeze(a zooplankton cold water species-10 legged).

Chromis need to eat 5 times a day imo. They are just as picky as anthias. I have 10 chromis and never lost one yet. But this is because I feed them mysid shrimp 5 times a day. Yes they beat on each other, but with a full stomache they are happy and willing to fight back!

Good luck :)

my chromis feed like tuna its awsom to watch. started with 13 a year ago down to 9 now. all the same size now BIG. yes the ones that died were smaller and were killed off by the biger ones. no real aggro to be seen they just chill in the water streems waiting for there next feeding.
