I have a Lemon Chromis that keeps nipping at the underside of my large Monticap. I've observed this for well over a year and fail to understand the attraction. This nipping takes place all day, every day. The Chromis swims up, takes 3-4 nipps, swims away, returns and repeats.
The issue I have is that this practice appears to result in a 'spot' bleaching effect on the coral. Though the Chromis is nipping at the outside, the coral bleaches through to the inside in a circular pattern that seems to slowly radiate outwards. If I break off the bleached portion, the Chromis picks a new area.
The coral is otherwise completely healthy and growing as it should. This is the only coral the Chromis bothers.
What the heck?
