Cirrhipathes spiralis (Spiral coral / spiral gongonian)- Non Photosynethic?

Hi all,

Just wondering if Cirrhipathes spiralis is non-photosynethic?

I have one nice specimen in my tank and honestly, I don't know either. Google search does say they are deep water. My tank is only lit by LEDs (2 strips of Current Powerbrites) and they are open 24x7. Mine eats pretty much anything from pieces of mysis to cyclopeeze. I'll snap a pic later. I have been trying to identify this coral for a long time and you have done it! Thanks!

xsiborg, thanks, seems like it's probably non-photo in that case but good that it's easy to feed that it eats anything unlike the typical gongonian that require smaller food

Yes, I was also a bit surprised that it eats mysis which is a "mouthful" for him...lol... I just saw it the first time eating that when I was feeding some to my fish and It just caught some by accident....Now, I don't even target feed it, I just feed my fish in the same area as the coral and it get it's meal through the food which escape the fish.

On a side note, when I got it, it was already looking healthy. When it started eating mysis, the tissue around the spiral skeleton became bigger/meatier...But when I recently started feeding my tank cyclopeeze, that is when the polyps would really open 24x7...It also developed a nice orange on white color from the original brown on white...

Cheers,
Rich :bounce3:

I've read that these aren't actually gorgonians, but black corals. Their skeleton is made of chitin.

edit: oops ninja beat me to it!

Yes, I do have an almost 100% non-photo tank, except for 1 duncan head and some gorgs which might be semi.

Here's an FTS...the water is a little cloudy due to feeding...I am having some dendrophyllia problems right now similar to maybe nemo and ninja's which is discussed in another thread here...the dendros in the the pic are pretty much the ones remaining which are healthy...I used to have a few more other colonies of the "jumbos" but they are in quarantine right now...One colony has already grown to about 15+ heads from less than 10 since I acquired it, now only 4 heads remain of the same colony...I am trying to save as much as I can of them but I am losing the battle...

P.S. Doorlady, I got mine from Vivid Aquariums, I just live across the street from them...They had only one in and wanted me to try it out. I've had mine for about 1.5 months now...

they have begun culturing these in Indonesia.

i have a 4" scar on my forearm from one of these hooking my arm when i was diving. the polyps are barbed and ripped into the skin pretty well considering i only brushed against it pretty gently.

xsiborg, very nice tank!

Are your dendro polyps shearing right off and do you have bright yellow fluffly things all over the stalk? If so, try to get your hands on a good anthelmintic (de-wormer). If you can find a source for Levamisole, get it. Assuming it is not already too late, I think it should work. Doing coral dips in saltwater with the anthelmintic would be the way to go. I tried flatworm exit, and it seemed to kill a good number of them. But, I think it was too late. I bought a different anthemintic, Praziquantel, in case I have this problem in the future.

Also, don't discard the skeleton after the dendro dies! I have like 10 new baby polyps that grew on it.

Thanks Ninja! I try to follow each and every advice here. It's a lot of work but very rewarding in the end. :)

It's exactly doing what you described on the other post. The heads just start tearing off, with the stalks pretty much intact for a while and then eventually also shread. I also observed that while that is happening externally, the inside starts to tear off also, deep within the mouth. I do notice some yellow fluffy things on the stalks but not as much as what nemo posted. I will definitely try the anthelmintic dip. I am also hopeful it's not too late. But if it is, I'll follow your lead on keeping anthelmintic on hand always just incase ;).

Thanks for all the advice!

Cheers,
Rich

Thanks xsiborg, I will call them. I got my bali blue gorg from them and it is beautiful. My husband would sell our house if we lived next door to vivid LOL
