Clam bed?

Where do people get the bed that I see clams laying on? they are man made. Sorry I do not know what they are called. I just got a small Derasa clam.

Also should I keep him in the sand until I get the bed?

Thanks in advance

Use some live rock rubble underneath it so that it attaches to something you can move easily. No need for a "bed", though it wouldn't hurt.

when my derasa was small, i placed him in a tupperware dish, inside the tank, with some flat pieces of rock rubble beneath him, and he attached to a small piece of it.

once he was attached, i would just sort of bury that slightly in the sand, to help keep him upright.

now that he's gotten larger, he isn't attached to that anymore, and is mainly kept in place by the weight of his shell pressing down in to the sand.

interestingly enough, when i picked him up to move him this past weekend it looked as if his byssal opening had largely closed up. so he may not even have the ability to attach anymore. i wish i had taken a closer look when he was younger, so see if there was a relative size change.

I will do the rock rubble and small dish thing. I just do not want to use any rock from my DT, my new tank is a 12'' cube with a Kessil 160. I will not have the dual 250 MH up and running until after summer on my DT so the clam stays in the small cube for now.

I made a cradle using milliput.

I took a dish and put some clear food safe plastic in the bottom.

I rolled some milliput so it was a little larger than the clam base. Flatted out into an oval shape and about half inch thick.

I put the dish into the DT, then pressed the clam gently into the milliput. The removed the molded milliput, careful to keep its underside flat and allowed it to dry.

Next I put the mold back into the tank, put the clam on the mold, and then pressed some more miliput around the base, to form a cup. Again, removed it and allowed it to dry.

Finally I put the dry cradle back into the dish, sat the clam on the nicely formed cradle (in the dish) them filled with pieces of LR rubble (loosely) all around it so it could not wiggle off the cradle. One week later the clam was bonded to the cradle. Now I can attach the cradle to anything I like.
