Clam being eaten...

i recently purchased a ~4-5 inch crocea clam. it look perfectly heathy in the store, and the same for a few days at home. The first place i put it on it jumped from whilst i was away for 2 days. i cam home and put him in another spot. It seemed happy and opened almost fully the firt day. the second day in i woke up and found him closed. i gently prodded it to check it it had attatched, but it wasnt and a whole load of pods scurried away. upon further inspection it looks like they are chewing up the foot, more like the threads that are holding it to a piece of rock about the size of a pea. the treads are turning a brownish colour. if anyone has any ideas of what i should do, any comments are appreciated,
thnx.

im giving up on my poor clam. the hermits are starting to take an intrest, and the pods have found a buffet. what botheres me is that it was OPEN in the morning. and closed at about 10-ish.
its being removed in the morning.

i sorry to hear of this. it sounds like the byssal gland was damaged . other then putting the clam in a QT where it can't be bothered i dont think theres much you can do.
