Clam detatched and now dieing!

I've got a small gold maxima I've had since September. Was doing well until a couple days ago when it wouldn't open all the way. Today I see that it's moved from it's normal spot and is loose on the sandbed. The Byssal threads are still attatched to the rock it was on. I had a rock under the sand that it had attatched to, and the threads are still attatched to that. What would cause the clam to rip away like this?

was he on a rock at the bottom of the tank?

as long as he moved on his own, he should be ok. as skinz said this is how they move in search of better conditions, possibly looking for more light. prop him back up on the rock and move him up a bit closer to the light once he attaches.

post a pic when you can.

It moved, but the bysal threads are still attatched to the rock. I had put a rock under the sandbed for it to attatch to and that's where he's been for several months. If it moved on it's own, wouldn't it have released itself and not left the threads behind? It makes me think that something forced it to move, tearing the threads. That is what scares me.

i agree, they have no choice but to drop their byssal threads if they decide to move. do you have anything big enough to rip a clams threads off of a rock?? what are your other inhabitants?

Ok, no worries then. I'll see how it goes. I had other clams move before but never noticed them leaving their threads behind.
