Clam irritans...

Recently something irritated my 2 clams... an 11" maxima I have had for 3.5 years and a newly acquired squamosa, roughly 4". I fed some formula 1 with a couple of drops of tabasco on it and I think this is what caused the problem, not 100% sure though. One of my anemone's also moved slightly and my sps polyps have not extended properly since. The DKH is 9, and my Ca is 380...all organics register zero. I fed in the form 1 in the morning, left town and when I retuirnred at 2 am the clams were gaping....

The maxima is bouncing back after gaping for a couple of days. The Squammy has gaped at night but during the day it goes into retract mode. Its retracted today. It doesn't seem to be processing any water through its incurrent to the outcurrent siphon. I know the tabasco now was a bad idea but I had a little ich and someone recommended it...BTW it worked.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the squammy at this point...I run 4 150w HQI 14 Phoenix for lighting over a 120 g tank.

I have done 10% WC and another of about 25%.

dont move the clams, do more water changes, add some carbon to help remove the pepper and hope it pulls through

Oh I should read- holistic remedy. Find the person that told you to do that, and rub tabasco in his eyes.

Yes...yes...great idea!!!

I always run carbon...

I have some more water brewing so I'll do another 20% WC or so tomorrow. The mantel is extended a bit on the squammy but it is closed. The tank as a whole looks a little better today, polyps are opened, etc...

Make sure that you do not have pyramid snails. Wait about 30 min after lights out and check the clam. I have these and can tell when they are bothering my crocea and squamie. They are very tiny snails so you have to look closely. check around the foot.

Thanks jasper for the heads up...I have kept many clams and dealt with many a pyramid snail. My leopard wrasses keep them in check for me, nevertheless, I did check just in case.

thanks

so is it not a good idea to use tabasco to get rid of ich? One of our new tangs is showing a little sign of ich and I dont want to go through the whole hyposalinity bit. :)

I think the tabasco helped for sure with the fish, however it irritated my reef organisms, and I didn't even use that much. Like 2 drops on a cube of form 1.

I can't imagine what the fish were thinking lol.

Fish: "Ouch! My mouth is on Fire!. I need some Water"
