Clam moved and left behind his white base (pic added)

My clam moved off of his rock onto the sand and left this white base behind. What did he do and is he going to be ok?

It has dropped it's byssal threads, it is not life threatening. The clam probably did this because it isn't happy with it's location. Try moving the clam to a different spot, preferably up on the rocks.

What lighting do you have?

Wow, I did not know they could just drop the byssal like that.

yes, this is how they move once they have attached. as long as the clam dropped it on his own there is usually no problems.
