Clam under pc's in a nano

Has anyone kept a clam under pc lighting in a nano tank?

I have a 10 gallon tank with the aqualight 96W fixture and was wondering if it was possible to keep a clam under that type of lighting. It's a total of 9.6 watts per gallon, is that enough?

Watts per gallon is not a very good rule to go by. I have heard of people doing this and some report success but I would not try it because I am not a fan of PC.

i would give it a try. I have a gigas flourishing in my 30g
and i run 130w of pc's and 30 of t5's.

It has grown substantially and its color has intensified....that being said, my tank is only 12" tall.

Good luck.

What type of clam should I try? I heard maxima is one of the less light demanding clams but I'm no expert.

I wouldn't put a maxima under pc's. Alien has his under T5's, that is a big difference from PCs. The only thing I would attempt would be some sort of cleaner clam such as a jewel box or maybe a derasa. IMO I think all of the others need much more light than PCs can provide. Just my thoughts though. Good luck.

clams will only truly flourish under MH and maybe t-5 if you place them up high enough. You could probably get away with one for a while but gotta consider the needs of the animal over our own.

What are signs of the clam not getting enough light? I'm thinking of trying it because I was thinking af adding another clam to my 45 gallon under 250W HQI MH's. If I see signs of it not doing good in my nano tank I can add it to my 45.

The Tridacnid forum will be able to give you a lot of details on what a clam that isn't getting enough light looks like.

Chiming in to say that I kept a Derasa under 130W of PC in a 10 gallon nano quite successfully. It was never more than about 12-14 inches away from the lightsource, and the water was heavily skimmed...those probably contributed to the success.

Well I only have a 96Watt fixture but I do have a nano remora skimmer that is just kickass.

I just read a <a href="http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=937826" target=_blank>post</a> the other day on this very topic...

Based on what I've read on other sites as well as the above, I am going to try a Derasa under a Coralife 20" AquaLight Deluxe (96 watt 50/50 4-Tube) above my 10 gallon.

ive had T. crocea under 2 x 75w VHO in a 20l for about 10months now growing and fully colored. the clam forum will likely flame any light other than MH.

All those poor clams that were kept before Metal Halide lights became the "must have" equipment... :P

I am going to start with an easy one in a 10 gallon that is under 11 inches from the 96w Power Compact. When I get my 92 gallon with two 250w 13K MH's and Quad 24" T5s I will try one of the more "touchy" ones...that's the current plan anyway. :)

I kept a crocea under pc's in my jbj nano, 72 watts. It was the highest coral in my tank. Was kept about 2 inches from the surface. It did fine.
