Clams and Filtration

I have a maxima clam that is getting fairly large and a baby gigas that is really starting to grow. I have a 90g and am thinking about buying a third clam. My question is one of trivia more than anything else. That is, do clams really help with filtration? I have been told they do, but that seems improbable to me.

they do consume nutrients from the water but you would need to keep a whole bunch of clams to make any substantial difference in an aquarium. so i guess you could say that they do help with filtration.

they do lower nitrates, from all the articles I've read, but as stated, would take a frag tank worth to see a diffrence I bet

but then again, you need clean water to keep them alive, so how would you really know?:)
