You might want to read the thread on Anthony Calfo's nano aquarium. He isn't a big fan of large clean-up crews and instead recommends tightly regulating the amount of food that goes into the aquarium. And, he does near 100% water changes!
He recommends a few species that are particularly good cleaners.
