Clean up crew?

Cycling my 65 gallon. Was thinking of adding a cleaning crew but didn't know if there's really a point to it. Gonna add some live rock bybthis weekend at latest. Ordering a skimmer now. So thoughts on adding a crew? Would it help? Hurt? Thoughts?

A clean up crew is necessary to keep the tank free of algae, but should not be added until the tank has cycled.

OK. Where in the world can I find un ured live rock? I don't think my lfs has any

You do not want un cured live rock..If you do get that you will have to cure it for a month or so . Best practice is to use the dual container method cleaning and changing water every 3 to 5 days..

Yes, buy cured rock and it will save you a lot of time (at least 4 weeks) Plain dry rock takes about 3 months give or take from the time you start to cure it until the time you have a cycled tank. Pretty close anyway. Cured rock will save you a lot of hassles and time.

Was gonna use the uncured to cycle my tank. Don't mind waiting. Got my qt set up with my perculas so I'm content for awhile. Apparently people dose ammonia to cycle the tank. I was told it does all that it self. Is the dosing just to speed it up or is it necessary?

While I'm at it I got a aqueon 500 power head in my 10 g qt. Clowns love it but I'm thinking I should turn it off at night because the flow goes through the entire tank and honestly not sure the clowns could sleep with the flow and don't want to stress them out with no sleep. Thanks

there'll be plenty of die offs on the uncured rocks. they'll rot and give off ammonia. so you don't need to dose more ammonia.

put some pvc elbows and tees in the qt for the fish to hide. i would not turn off the powerhead at night. if they don't like it, they'll sleep in the pvc. moreover you need water movements in the tank for better gas exchange to get more oxygen for the fish at night.

Confusing Stopping Post .I hope

Ok i think the issue your having is difference between cured live rock and Uncured live rock.

Uncured live rock
rock took out of the ocean put in a bag and shipped to you. Its never been pressure washed never set in a holding center. Never cleaned. It could have anything living in it.
Cured live rock
rock taken from the ocean. Taken to a cleaning facility where they wash it with pressure on Steel racks to allow the unwanted critters to craw out and all the Dirt and sediment to escape.

Now these facilities only keep it for a few weeks or so in there curing facility So when it gets to you or your lfs there is still organic material in it. still can be critters you do not want .But less of a chance. So it still needs to Be Cleaned the Cured even further . In a newly setup tank you can do this in the tank. it will also aid in cycling your tank.

Un Cured live rock will only give you a Closed system of stagnant Water for weeks or months . Will become a nutrient factory right from the start.
As far as the clean up crew . You are thinking way ahead of yourself. You only need this when you start feeding the tank inhabitants and you only need to add them a few at a time. Other wise they will all eat good for a bit then start dying off unless you put food in there for them . Defeating the purpose of having them.
THE Term "CLEAN UP CREW" Was Created by the people who sell crabs and snails in bundles. Its a Concept to get you to buy more then you need..
Hope this helps and good luck :fish1:

A clean up crew is necessary to keep the tank free of algae, but should not be added until the tank has cycled.

Not if you keep a low nutrient system with proper size skimmer Filter media circulation and Water changes..

I am starting to hate the term Clean UP Crew .

only add inverts and snails as you need them and only add what can feed themselves .

That's why I was thinking going uncredited instead of cured. I have some base rock and live sand setup in the tank. Maybe I'll put some pvc in against the flow tomorrow so they got a spot to sleep at night

if they are young perc clowns they will likely just kinda hang out next to a rock or pipe and not go into it.. mine are kinda like that when lights go out . They hang out and hover over there GSP That is hosting them.... Why they picked the GSP Is unknown to me but she will protect it until she draws my blood if i try to get near it...

Female is probably 2 inches and male is like 1 3/4 they've actually grown a lot in the last 3 weeks that I've had them
