Cleaning outside of tank

Just wanted to see how everybody was cleaning the outside of their tanks. I have an AGA 75 gallon, with 3 little kids. The outside may be more dirty than in inside.

I've heard not to use ammonia/chemical based products has they pose the risks of contaminating the tank.....

Just wanted to get some help!

Thanks in advance.

...I use either clean water and paper towel...

...or glass cleaner sprayed on a paper towel...

A lfs near me uses white vinegar and rubbing alcohol mixed (the alcohol causes it to evaporate quickly), but I haven't tried that yet. I personally do the windex-on-paper towel away from the tank method.

I use the glass wipes that are in a container! That way I know they won't drip or spray into the tank!

If you are set are using a Windex like product, you can use anything that is safe for tinted windows on cars. It is ammonia free. Not that it doesn't have other chemicals in it, and you may want to take other precautions, but at least there is less of a chance of contamination.

Dry microfiber cloth works for me. Although it uses a little bit of elbow grease it works great. Plus side, I don't have a huge tank it is only 40 gallons. :)

Edit:

It doesn't leave streaks either.

Thanks for all the good ideas.. I was just a bit paranoid, ended up using the vinegar /water idea. It took care of the kids grim with great results. However 15 minutes later ...... gotta love kids.

Thanks again.

Vinegar works wonders for the glass.. for quick clean ups, esp. for lthe kids perpetual fingerprints keep a small sponge soaked in vinegar (distilled white) in a tupperware container or the like near the tank.

It is perfectly safe around the aquarium.. in fact many people add vinegar to their limewater to increase its efficacy.

I find the stuff indispensable as an all purpose aquarium related cleaner and buy it in bulk. I soak my skimmer in it occasionally, use it to soak my pump impellers/housings when i am cleaning them, on the glass of the tank, and to clean my bulbs/reflectors.

Best stuff for aquarium cleaning ever IMO :D

i use windex... i spray it on the glass but I don't squeeze it hard enough to mist it. I just go across the tank and squeeze just enough to get it to drizzle out on the glass in a solid stream. In one sweep across the 4 ft of my tank the trigger doesn't even get pulled in the whole way.
