The tank was filthy. Was able to scrape all the glass clean with a razor. I have seen people Say to use vinegar to clean too. The only place I have algae now,is the silicone. Will vinegar help with that? And if so should I just spray it on the silicone and let it set? Or would I be better off filling, the tank and mixing vinegar with it, if so how much vinegar do I need to use. Also...how important us it to clean all the old stuff out of the overflow box? The 1/2" or so area between the two pieces of plastic. Thanks in advance.

I have used muriatic acid (obtained cheaply at pool or home supply stores) in the past to remove heavy calcium deposits. It is concentrated acid and a small amount will do wonders. Make sure to use protective gloves and clothing.

I would not spray it, better to fill the tank and then add some to dissolve any remaining calcium carbonate build up. Not sure if it will help with algae in the silicone. You could try some in a small area. I know that bathroom silicone sealer does not come fully clean once mildew and mold start, so I am guessing the algae may be hard to fully get rid of. Have you tried a bleach wash?

Get 4 or 5 gallons of vinegar and fill the tank with tap water and the vinegar. get a couple power heads going.
will also serve as your leak test, scratch test, bubble in the seams test!
