Clicking coming from tank?

As stated in my earlier post today, I purchased a 10lbs piece of LR with some beginer corals on it. I have it in my QT. I notice clicking coming from around my tank. It is coming from the QT, and I can not seem to find anyting in there. What would make a clicking sound like that? There is an Elephant Snail on the rock, but I can not find any articles stating that they click.

I have been wondering the same with my reef tank and I don't have any shrimps or mantis to speak of.

cmc, if you've got a clicking sound coming from your tank....you do have shrimp to speak of...lol. Clicking sounds are usually produced by either Pistol or Mantis Shrimp. Pistol Shrimp are great and totally reef safe. Mantis shrimp on the other hand, are NOT at all reef safe and will kill fish. They'll also take a nice chunk out of you if given half a chance. Mantis Shrimp are also considered THE fastest animal in the animal kingdom when it comes to how fast they strike.

I'm fairly sure it's a mantis. Toss a piece shrimp in the tank, turn off the lights and wait for the little bugger to come out.

Friend of mine was watching TV late at night, and heard a clicking sound. It was one of his hermit crabs, it kept running into the glass making the noise, could be that.

I've heard it too. The first few times I thought the glass cracked somewhere:( . But then I noticed, when my Leopard Wrasse grazes the rock, I hear the poping sound. I'm surprised he still has teeth left:D .

A Mantis shrimp can definitely kill an Emerald Crab. I highly doubt a Pistol Shrimp would kill anything in a reef tank though.

an average sized pistol shrimp can't hurt anything. I have seen a large pistol shrimp take out a astrea snail though.

Well, it is a Mantis Shrimp. He is only 3/4 inch long. I will try to flush him out with the old turkey baster. Anybody have some cocktal sauce?

Mantis' are amazing and tough survivors. Many people would take it off your hands if you catch it alive. I have one living in my sump and he is cool! I have caught three and all were through removing the rock they were living in. The bottle never worked for me although I have heard that some people have caught them that way. Two out of three of mine were very reclusive and took months to catch. The snail and crabs loved the bait in the bottle though!

Don't overestimate a mantis shrimp. They can only break tank if larger than 5", most hitchers would prefer a crab over a fish, and at 3/4 inch it can't do much harm. The simple fact is that most mantises are starved and start their fish hunting activities when starving. Not to say some won't take out a fish even if well fed, because it does happen, but usually unless its a bottom dweller it is generally left alone as it would USUALLY rather eat a snail or crab or shrimp. I would get rid of it, but definately give it away in our little forum. I just happen to be wandering cause of a lack of activity.....

I have the bottle trap set up and hope I catch him tonight. I tried the turky baster with salt and even freshwater into the hidding spot I saw him in. No luck though.

Wow turnburn, that was one helluva video...
Good luck catching your mantis gistsc, I agree with not killing it if at all possible. I bet you could give that guy away to someone in the Mantis forum.
