I need some pump reccomendations for the closed loop? I have one drain and two returns.

I plan on mostly SPS in this tank and the tank is a BB tank!

i'm starting up a 29g sps bb with a closed loop also. i'm going with the panworld 50px-x on a om squirt. two drains with the returns over the top.

Why dont you just drill the tank for the closed loop? Here is a link the my project thread. I will check that pump out. What is it rated at?

i am drilling 1" drains for the closed loop, but just doing 2 3/4"returns over the top and 2 3/4" returns either drilled at the bottom or over the top. still haven't completely decided.

Well if you go 30x the turn over rate in a 29g your only at 870g. I don't think your going to need to much flow. With about any 2 pumps you'll hit that. You were talking about a mag 12 plus a mag 7. That's a lot of heat going into that tank along with around 1450gph. That 50x the turn over rate. What you trying to build a Jacuzzi?

i don't think 30x turnover is too much for an sps bb. i'm going to have around 45 to 50x turnover with the panworld and a mag 5.

30x is fine and about the normal for good tank. 50x is just a waste. I would much rather have 1 pump for this tank. cut down on electrical and heat. But even if went with 2 pumps no need to blast the sh*t out of things. 50x the turn over is overkill as far as im concerned.

For my tank if I use the rio 1700 @4ft 400GPH ish and a mag 18 @4ft 1375 GPH totaling 1875GPH what is the turnover rate on this?

the more flow you have, the more outputs you should have. your sps won't like that much flow concentrated in to confined an area

50x is a lot, but not much if you had 10 outputs @ 150g per hour
thats really not practical though.

How much head pressure on the mage do you think youll have? 4ft of head is 1375GPH plenty of flow for that lil tank. 7 feet of head pressure is 1060 still over 36x the turn over rate. Still good. If you got under 8 feet of head i think youll be good. Im sure a mag 12 will heat that lil tank quick. Might need to mount or get an external pump if its going to be an issue. But having 1 pump will help with both the cost to buy the equipment, the cost to run it, and the heat problem. I think its a good idea. The only reason i can see 2 run another pump is if one fails. You still have movment.

That would be 65x the turn over rate.

1875 (the flow)
divided by
29 (the size of your tank).
--------------------------------------------------------------
equals 64.65 times the turn over.

Way to much.

i would rather have a pump more suited to run externally, plus i do think the mag 18 is too much flow for only two returns. i would want something around 800gph for the closed loop. and a low flow pump for the return from the sump. i was going to go with a mag 3 and still might, but i already have a mag 5.

I will be mounting the pump externally so that should elimnate the heat issues right?
AJ

Yea that will take care of most of the heat transfer. There will be some but not close to the amount as if it was sitting under water.

you want about 300gph coming out of each return. and you will have some head loss on the closed loop from elbows and such but not much.

Agreed and agreed. I do have one mag 9.5 on my 55g drum for storing and mixing saltwater for water changes. It runs 24/7 out side the drum. One thing i noticed its very loud compaird to the one in my tank under water. And i have also heard they dont last long outta water. Mine has been going 24/7 for 9 months so no problems there but i have heard some peoblems with them.
