closed loop without drilling

I'm going BB so wanted to install a closed loop system. Don't really want to drill any holes. Should i go over the back of the aquarium or can I put a submersible pump directly into the aquarium attached to some pvc that snakes it's way around the bottom of the tank. Putting a pump in the aquarium like that seems odd but so do a lot of other things with this hobby. Does anyone even have a closed loop without a drilled tank? Thanks!!
