Cloudy Eye Opinions

Moving on Up
Would like to get some opinions on this. This fish has been in QT for about 6 weeks. 2 weeks ago I noticed his eye had what appeared to be a scratch on it. The other eye is fine and the fish eats and acts like normal. I was monitoring it and now it appears to be getting a little worse. I have done 2 prazi treatments. What are your thoughts?

The cloudy eye could be a result of the recent unstable water parameters.
The tang's immune system is stressed/compromised from the recent move to a new tank,
unstable water parameters and a potential injury and possible bacterial infection.

I would focus on pristine water conditions to try to decrease stress.
I would enrich the food with beta glucan, selcon and vitamins to boost the immune system.
In light of the fact of recent stressors, possible injury versus bacterial infection and now a cloudy eye
- you could be conservative - focus on water quality, decreasing stress and feeding enriched food.
Or you could be aggressive and do everything in the "conservative approach as well as adding antibiotics.

For antibiotics, I use maracyn - 2, kanamycin and nitrofurazone.
Jungle has a medicated food "Anti-Bacteria" that contains nitrofurazone and sulfa.
When feeding medicated food - only feed the medicated food as to make sure the fish gets enough antibiotics.
If you opt for antibiotics, you must treat for 7 - 10 days even if the symptoms disappear,
so you do not partially treat and run the risk of the bacteria developing a resistance to the antibiotics and redeveloping.

Please provide updates... Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the feedback. The water quality is decent I do regular large water changes. I did start a kanaplex treatment about 3 days ago. This is Seachems version of kanamycin. My plan was to do a full treatment 3 doses seperated by a day between doses then do a large water change and start again with another 3 doses. Good to hear someone else thinks it is bacterial.

When only one eye is affected it is most always the result of injury.......and I believe you cited that you thought it was that already.

I have had great success performing 30 minute Epsom salt dips once to twice a day. If you have the fish in a QT tank, I would just add a tablespoon per 5 gallons to the tank and you should be fine.....otherwise they can be performed in a separate bucket. Antibxs are not bad, but may not help with this particular injury. The antibx you are using are better off used when the fish has a systemic infection vice the localized infection that seems apparent here.

Good luck.

Please keep this thread upated as I am having a very similiar problem with an Achilles. It has been in QT for 6 months, is very healthy, eats everything, and water quality is very good.

He has been treated with Cupramine in the past for Ich and 2 treatments of Prazi. He has niether Ich or Flukes anymore but just as with yours, he has one eye that is slightly cloudy.

I did try a Maracyn 2 treatment a couple of months ago, I am interested to see how the product you are using will impact it.

Look forward to update.

I checked him this morning with a flashlight and the eye appears to be looking better. Tonight will be the 3rd and final dose of the kanaplex. I have also been soaking his seaweed in a spoonful of kanaplex on the days that I do not dose the medication.
