Clown breeding questions

hello,

I'm not that good with terminology, but I want to get a 29 drilled for a return and overflow, and my question is, can I drill for an overflow on the grow-out tank? or should that be a stagnant tank without a return or overflow and just a bubbler for water agitation?

I only really want to set this up for one breeding paid and raising section.. does this make sense at all?

for a growout tank an overflow is fine.

for the fry tank you don't want one as the fry are easily sucked in.

So if I get a 29, think I can split it and have one side be the breeding side with overflow and return and the other side be the fry tank with just the air stone in it

I am sure you could make it work splitting the 29 gal but to me it would be more hassle than it would just to have 2 seperate tanks. as stated the fry tank needs dim lighting, no light from the sides and just an airstone and heater. a growout tank should basically be made like a FO tank with plenty of hiding spots.

Hey Shifty how do you know when it time to put the little guys into the grow out tanks? I've got about six that are getting there second strips.

usually between 4-6 weeks they are ready, but that also depends on the breed clowns, some grow slower than others. you want them big enough not to get sucked into any filtration.

Is it possible to break even breeding 1 pair of clowns? (Money wise)

Sure. The hardest part is finding stores to take them.

My one breeding pair turned into 11 pairs, with a full fish room, with 6 of the 11 laying.

With my main Ocy pair, I was raising 200-250 every 14 days when I got good. Its hard to move 4-500 normal Ocellaris a month :)

My honest advice: before you invest into a decent (or even crude) set-up, talk to your local fish stores and see if they will buy your fish, and how many per month they will buy.

a good friend of mine has started up a shop and will buy some... i just ordered a pair of extreme snowflakes so they will be closer to breeding age... but i will certainly talk "cheddar" with him...

I want to start breeding a normal snowflake with a black snowflake because i love the pair and they will give me awesome babies... but thanks a lot man, ill check it out! My first pair come in wednesday!

keep in mind, if your wanting to breed a clown that has a higher price tag like some of the designer clowns your gonna sell alot less than if you were to breed regular ocy's or percs and sell them at 5.00 each.

I actually have 2 places to sell mine, 1 will take around 50 every 2 weeks and the other will take 500 a month but I am also raising regular ocy's. once I get into the more spendier clowns they will take them but not nearly as many, maybe 10 a month or so as it is much harder for them to sell high dollar fish fast enough.
