i am real new at the hobby and i just bought a clown fish as my first saltwater fish, when i shut the lights off at night, he seems to be all messed up, and swims into walls and rocks and stuff. should i leave the lights on? is this normal?
I trip over stuff in the dark, too. A fish's eyes take longer to adjust to changes than a humans, and even ours can take a while. As long as the lights are on/off at the same time every day (use a timer) she will adjust to the schedule and start heading to her sleeping spot shortly before lights out.
+1 on getting a timer for your lights. My clowns kind of just wiggle around in the spot they sleep in. Make sure there is a spot your clown can go to that will protect him and make him feel safe. Yu will notice once he finds a comfy spot he will be in the same spot every night.
actually i think my kolia power head is casing some problems. it is a pretty big power head someone lent it to me so i dont know what size it is but i have a 50 gallon tank and it doesnt create a whirlpool or anything but with the lights off and that on he is all over the place, but with it off he just chills at the bottom, should i shut it off at night with the lights?
One of my clownfish did the same thing in the beginning. After the lights went out, I would look with a flashlight and the clownfish would be swimming around like crazy. It would swim right in front of the powerhead and then let the current take it away while doing flips(no joke). I got a video of it one night, it was pretty funny.
It settled down after a little while and now every night it just sleeps in this little cave area on the sand with its mate.
ok i am just worried, i dont want the darn thing to die, just gonna have to suck it up and turn the lights out and let him fend for himself. sounds mean but i dont have much of a choice.
yea he was pretty active during the day today we just picked him up this afternoon. my parameters seem to be good so far, he is the only fish in a big tank right now. i am just starting so have meadicor equipment.
leave a night light on in the room or a lamp on when the aquarium lights first go off. Later, turn off the room light or put the lamp on timer too to go off after the tank lights
Thanks guys, now do fish require a certain amount of rest just like us human? My sched kinda sucks i am up at like 430 every morning and go to bed around 10 or 11. Can the fish be on the same sched as me without any issues?
Also will the clown fish eat the blood worms and flake food? I am hearing different things now, when in the begining i heard they would.
From what I have heard you can have the tank on any schedule that you like. Just make sure to have about 12 hours of lights on and 12 hours of lights off.
Get some timers (if you don't already have some) and set them to the same time for everyday. I have my lights run from 1-11PM (daylights 2-10PM) because I am at school and work during the day. After you have the lights come on and off at the same time consistently the fish will adjust.
so i am thinking about maybe a 7 am to 9pm for the lights and then go from there, i know that some people have a 14 hour day light and 10 hour of night
