clown fish and lights

My clownfish is behaving like this as well. Once the lights are off, he goes CRAZY and goes splashing all around and will flop itself at the surface of the water in a languid state close to dying.

Once the lights are back on, he is back to normal.

1) I would like to solve this problem with a solution other than switching on/off lights at a fixed time.
2) Why did he behave like this suddenly? He was fine all the while.

Oh yea, 6 year old thread revived!:)

You can buy some type of cheap blue light LED that you can leave on at night over the tank. My lights have them built in and they are on the minute the main lights go off and then they go off two hours before my lights start back up in the morning. This might make you feel better as well as allowing your clown to still see after lights out.
