Clown question

5 months ago I purchased two tank bred perculas. Well after a month one decided to disappear completely. I looked all over the ground and through out the tank I never found a body. Well my single clown has lived these lasts few months pretty lonely and I am thinking about getting another clown and another fish or two. My question is am I going to be able to add another clown with this one being in the tank so long alone ? Its a 24 gallon tank. My other option would be to see if my local fish store would take my current clown for some store credit and just purchase two more.

Another side question is it natural for clowns to stay mostly to the top of the tank ? I have never seen him interact at all with the aquascape.

I just introduced a Wyoming clown to my Picasso that I've had for a year and it took a day of "rough housing" and now they'rea happy couple. You just have to make sure the new clown is smaller. And most fish store will give you credit for a fish but it isn't much usually

24 g is a bit small to introduce a new clown to one that's been in there for a while. If you must do it, suggest to get a smaller perc and use an acclimation box.

Thanks for the reply! I have thought about getting a smaller one but they say its still uncertain.

By the box you mean like a breeding box or a small qt box that hangs on the side?

I'm only looking to add another clown so I can have a pair for an anemone.

It's natural for tank bred clowns to just hang around at the top. All mine do that and I've read similar response from this forum.

+1 on getting a much smaller juvie to add w/ existing clown. A 24gal should be ok for a pair of clowns & anemone, but not anymore fish.
Yea, it's natural for them to stay where they feel the safest. Getting an anemone might help it to explore more. Mine stayed up behind a powerhead for months, sometimes on it's side. Freaked me out when I first saw it--thought it was dead.

Thanks a million for the reply. I really wish he would explore more. There's a lot of wasted space lol.

When I introduced my wyoming to the other clown they were in a 14g biocube. Obviously their wild creatures so you can't predict wether they will take to one another but I think as long as you get a smaller one you'll be ok. I feel like a smaller tank is better for them to acclimate to each other since they are kind of forced to be close and can't really get away. The white one started hosting the anemone with the other one so it's been pretty neat.

That's awesome that it worked out for you. I am hoping I get the same turn out.
