Clown Tang, Sohal Tang

I have been really looking into getting one of these for my 240 FOWLR. I will have large angels, a few other tangs, athias, ect. I know Clowns are hard to keep, but I heard that they are super agressive too? SOhals are mean, I know that, but I am just wondering which would be the better choice, if any at all. Thanks!

Take this with a grain of salt, since I only have experience with my fish. I have a Sohal with a Pacific Blue tang, Yellow Tang, Bartletts Anthias, Dispars, Solar Fairy Wrasse, and he has been in the tank for over a year, I got him when he was less then 4" in length and now he is about 9" and yet he still gets along with the other fish. I think he is the best looking fish I have so I felt bad I had him in a 120gal so thats why I bought a 8' 240gal just for him. My Sohal is the king of the tank and he asserts his dominance but he hasn't killed any fish in my tank in the year I have had him and he seems happy since he doubled his length in the time he was in the smaller tank.

The sohal is a hardy fish. The clown on the other hand is more delicate and requires a little more care and are sencitive to water temp. changes. both are very aggresive and get big. before I would get one how many other fish will be in the tank with it. and what kind of angels do you have. The reason I'm asking is that I've heard of sohals killing angels. If I were going to get one it would be the sohal.

I own both a sohal and a clown tang. The sohal is definately aggressive, but the clown is WAY more aggressive. (they are in different tanks)

IMO, once you put a large clown tang in tank, don't plan on putting anything else in it. That being said, they are one of the best looking fish in the ocean.

I've had the clown tang for going on a year now and have not had any problems healthwise. Generally they do not ship well, but once you get a healthy one to your tank they seem to do fine.

Yes a sohal can kill an angel. i had a sohal kill a queen angel almost twice its size.

I have a 72gal tank w/20gal sump... would that be big enough for a sohal? just considering adding a juvenile one to my tank. Don't they only get about as big as a Huma Trigger?

I'd vote Sohal.... Both are aggressive enough that individual examples would make the difference either way so call that even. The sohal is a bit tougher. Looks are personal preference....

For keeping tangs in the same water odd numbers seem to work best. If you can keep everyone playing "rock/paper/scissors" it can help keep them from ganging up on one fish.

Sohal are very large and aggressive Tangs that need to be housed in tank atleast 6' and you need to be careful with what tank mates you placed them with. A small one can grow from 4" to 8"-10"+ within a year or so and go from being fine to attacking and killing all the fish in the tank. Large ones are best housed with aggressive fish like triggers, groupers and such. For a 72gal tank it's best to stick with the smaller tangs, like Koles, Yellow, Sopas, Purple, PBT or even small Hippos.

I have a medium Queen right now, but plan on getting an Emperor, and maybe a French. I really want a Sohal, but if it is going to be a problem, then maybe it isnt worth it. My Queen is very aggressive to my Dogface Puffer and Blonde Naso. Maybe if I got the Sohal it would teach the Queen a lesson! WIll the Sohal bite all the other fish? Thats what my Queen does and he left marks all over my Naso.

Not sure. I never had mine in with a angel. mine was in with other tangs and triggers. thery are very preaty fish and since you have that big of a tank you could try one. but keep an eye on it and make sure that it's not harrasing your other fish to bad. It will on the other hand make it's pressence known to all the fish.
