If i add a clown tang first to a 5ft display would i have problems adding smaller fish like fire fish and gobys?

Yes.

Clown tangs are extremely aggressive and really need to be in a much larger tank than what you propose.

Exactly. These tangs get very big (maybe 15'') and are unpredictably ornery in a huge tank. I kept one for many years in a 240 and he was almost as nasty as my Sohal is now. Aggressive fish + cramped quarters= mayhem. In addition, these are very difficult fish to keep under the best conditions; lots of room, pristine water, etc. L.A. considers them ''expert only" fish and suggests a minimum of 250 gals---this from a dealer.
