clown triggerfish in a reef?

Hi all! Has anyone ever had any luck keeping a clown trigger fish in a reef tank? Please let me know your experiences if you have. thanks!

You wouldn't be able to keep any inverts

Hmmmm... corals are invertebrates, so that's not really true. But things like hermit crabs and snails, possibly even cleaner shrimp, will get picked on by the CT.

FWIW, I have had triggers in the past that leave my hermits and snails alone, but it's mainly because the mobile invertebrates figure out that night time is the best time to come out of hiding :)

Great info guys keep it coming. I am actually asking this question for a friend of mine who has a 90 gallon tank he is going to be setting up soon. He was going to purchase a tiny one from liveaquaria. Im sure he relizes that some day he will have to re-home it or get a larger aquarium. thanks everyone! Please keep sharing so i can show him this thread before he buys one.

Lots of CTs get re-homed. usually as soon as they mature a bit and kill every fish they can. This isn't unusual at all; these are one of the most aggressive fish we keep. BTW, the "tiny" or "baby", all-yellow faced, Clown Triggers have a terrible survival rate. I don't know why, slightly bigger ones are easy. I would never keep a CT in a reef, they love to re-arrange everything.

IMO -- should get a fish that will fit the current tank, and not a tank that someone thinks they will have, or be able to re-home the fish too -- so, I would tell your friend that the clown trigger will not work.

I completely agree. Rehoming a large fish is not as easy as you think. You have to be able to find someone with a much bigger tank. That's also why stores are often not in a hurry to take on those fish (even if they tell you when you buy it that they will).

It's pretty common for clown triggers to eat corals and anemones too, so I wouldn't be in a hurry to put one in a reef. There are a few people I know of who have been able to do it long term. The vast majority of them end in disaster.

The clown trigger will stress or kill every fish in the tank sooner than later. Will also eat your clean up crew. I have seen the kill some big gorilla crabs. My lfs used to also feed them damsels. They are mean awesome fish. But not for a reef.

my old CT, in a 180 which I sold, chewed down the wires for my power heads !! K7s

that should tell you enough about the fish lol
he is happy in a friends 350 now ..

PS. the 180 was even small for him ... he used every single inch of the tank ...

Thank you everyone for your post I just showed this thread to Matt and he has changed his mind about buying a clown trigger. lol
