Clownfish (Pair)

Are the ORA clownfish pairs which are sold on Divers Den a true mated pair? Or are they two clownfish that are put together but not necessarily a "true" pair? Thank you.

Thank you for your post. We occasionally offer retired ORA Clownfish pairs through Diver’s Den. If we are offering any of these pairs, it will state that they are a retired breeding pair. Otherwise, the ORA Clownfish pairs are not guaranteed to be mated; but they have been kept in the same tank and monitored closely throughout the weeks of quarantine. If the pairs are kept in the proper conditions, the will likely become a breeding pair.

So in the ORA pairs on DD is one guaranteed male and one female? I'm trying to decide if I should just purchase 2 of the tank bred clowns from liveaquaria for 1/3 the price of the pairs on DD, or if it is worth it to get a DD pair. I do prefer to by from DD but usually the difference in price from LA and DD is not 3x for a fish or pair or trio. I am assuming this must have to do with the "ORA" for the clownfish(ocellaris). Thanks.

When you order from our LiveAquaria.com website you can request a male and female, however, we apologize we are unable to guarantee that is what you will receive.

Thanks for the reply. I know the clowns from DD are freshwater dipped by you guys to prevent brook, etc. Are the LA clowns also freshwater dipped or only DD?

I wasn't aware of that, but I would say the DD fish go through much more extensive QT'ing, looking for problems, making sure the fish is eating, examining it's behavior, etc. All that takes time, thus the price increase on DD animals.

Yes in the DD section they do "repeated freshwater dips" on clownfish, read this link regarding the DD process.

I wish DD had common fish too like hippo tangs etc, I would buy everything from DD if they did.

I wish DD had common fish too like hippo tangs etc, I would buy everything from DD if they did.

I've seen the yellow belly hippo's on there many times. A little pricier, I think like $125 or so though.

I have seen them on there too. I think the regular ones look much better.

they have some regular hippos on there but thats on rare occasion since everything on the divers den is either a rare species or is the best of the best of a particular species

Yes mainly rare specimens only. I will keep my eye out for a normal hippo (and red sea sailfin) but will probably end up having to get them from regular la, which is ok.
Back to the original subject, I'm curious if the clowns at la are freshwater dipped just like the dd clowns are??

you know if you order tank raised clownfish then you dont have to worry about wild parasites as much, plus you arent pulling any more fish out of the ocean . its a win win

Thank you for your post and your patience. We have spoken to our Aquaculture Coral and Marine Life Facility regarding the quarantine procedures for Clownfish at our Aquatic Facility in California. They have informed us that it is common practice to work with these fish by utilizing freshwater dips, Formalyn baths and other protocols to control Brooklynella and other pathogens. However we still feel that it is very important to recommend quarating any new fish prior to placing them in your display tank.
