CMAC VI: Speaker Profiles!
Presenter Profile: Murray Camp
Murray W. Camp is a reef aquarist and author with over sixteen years of experience in keeping captive marine ecosystems, from 5 to 800 gallons. He is a member of the Dallas Marine Aquarium Society and Dallas/Ft. Worth Marine Aquarium Society, and currently runs five reef systems using different probiotic methodologies. He lives and practices law in Dallas, Texas.
Topic Presentation: You want me to put what in my tank? - An overview of probiotic and labile carbon dosing methodologies.
This presentation will provide an overview of the commercial and DIY probiotic and carbon dosing methodologies being used in reef aquaria today. The presentation will last approximately one hour and be accompanied by a power point that will contain images of products discussed and reef tanks using this system. Topics covered include:
1. The science supporting ULN (ultra low nutrient) systems, including bacterial biomass and metabolism enhancement and nutrient reduction, and bacterioplankton as a food source for corals;
2. A comparison of the commercial systems available (Prodibio, Zeovit, Ultralith, NeoZeo, NP Biopellets, etc.)
3. Current DIY methodologies, including vodka, vinegar, sucrose, glucose, ascorbic acid, and mixed carbon sources (VSV, VSV+Vit.C, VGV, etc.);
4. Husbandry considerations when using these systems (skimming, GFO, GAC, alkalinity and potassium balance, amino acid supplementation, etc.)
5. Potential risks and pitfalls of each system and probiotics as a whole.
Presenter Profile: Ron Shimek
Dr. Shimek's research, done over the last 35 years, has resulted in about 30 scientific publications as well as invitations to speak at many international or national scientific symposia. He has primarily investigated the feeding and nutritional ecological roles of many marine benthic invertebrates but, in addition, has also examined some aspects of their reproductive biology.
Awarded the 2001 MASNA Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Marine Aquarium Hobby, he has published two books, The Coral Reef Aquarium, An Owner's Guide to A Happy Healthy Fish and Marine Invertebrates. 500+ Essential -To-Know Aquarium Species, as well as writing over 100 articles focusing on the aquarium husbandry or natural history of marine animals appearing in Natural History, Aquarium Frontiers, Aquarium Fish Magazine, Aquarium Fish International, Coral, Marine Fish and Reef Annual, Aquarium USA, FAMA , ReefLife, Shells and Sea Life and other publications.
As an invited speaker at national, regional, and local marine aquarium society meetings, he has discussed and promoted rational reef aquarium keeping based on the knowledge of natural systems and animal physiology. In addition to teaching at universities, he has taught online courses for advanced aquarists covering Invertebrate Biology, Invertebrate Reproduction and Embryology, and The Functional Ecology of Deep Sand Beds. Dr. Shimek currently resides in Wilsall, Montana.
Presenter Profile: Marc Levenson
Known to many online as "Melev", Marc Levenson has been in the hobby for about 10 years and his Percula clownfish (the first fish he bought) is still with him to this day. Marc runs a website called www.melevsreef.com that is there to help hobbyists everywhere.
His site started off as a single page many years ago, talking about his 29g, but then grew longer and longer. It was like a never-ending blog, until one day he started page 2 about a new project for his tank - a sump. Over time, the site grew to include topics of interest such as: acrylic work, photography, solutions to pests, information about my tanks, lighting, feeding, and more.
Marc has been online for years, originally running a BBS called “The Kingdom”, run on an Atari STe back when” high speed” was a 2400 baud modem. More recently, he's been a part of a podcast for reefkeepers, www.reefcast.com which has 25 different episodes available for download.
Marc was on the BOD for MASNA.org, He has been on BOD for DFWMAS for at least 4 years where he served as president for three years and is currently vice president. Over the last few years Marc has written a few magazine articles, and was a contributing author to an e-book called Reefkeeping Basics. www.reefkeepingbasics.com
