College Dorm NANO

The biggest tank i can have is a 10g, they wouldnt let me go any bigger. Whats the best choice i got? Never kept a nano, i have a 120g mixed reef at home.:headwally: I was thinking an all in one or just a standard 10g. One of the things i would really like is a same constant water level.

I would go with an AIO because everything will be contained with in the tank to save you some space and less to worry about.

How about a 14 gallon nano cube? They're not going to actually measure the volume right? Just call it a 10 gallon which it will be after adding some LR.

I'm pretty sure someone on your floor will be growing weed in their closet so what's 4 little gallons of salt water right?

+1 on that. I just got this tank from Marine Depot today. For the cost it is an amazing value, they've thought most details out very well. I usually hate AIOs but for a simple nano like this, you can't beat it!

i have a chance to get a 29g biocube for $250 new. should i just get it and call it a 10G? is a 29g biocube alot bigger than a standard 10g? its a cube so wouldnt it look smaller?

29 gallon biocube is probably pushing it. It will definitely not look like 10 gallons. I'd say that a 14 gallon cube is about as big as you can push it.

You could explain that with all the rocks and sand, it's only 10 gallons of actual water? I know, it's a stretch...

A 20 long looks pretty small next to two 5 gal buckets, right...right? LoL. I'm lucky I got a 14g aqua culture before they stopped making them- same dimensions as a standard 10g but taller. A fishneedit 70w metal halide w/ 20,000k bulb would be awesome over it! I'm thinking about using it for a small coral qt or frag tank. But a 10-15g with it would be cool I think anyways.

talked to the the college today. the gentleman on the phone said that between me and him during dorm inspection they rarely take measurements and that if they ask just say its a 10g, lol..

I wouldnt push it personally. Just follow the rules. If they were to take measurements, and make you uproot it. It would really suck... Alot of time and money would be invested.

Also IMO you can enjoy a 10 just as much as a 180! Theres so much beauty. Get a 10! :)

You will be pretty ****ed if your 6mo old 29g gets discovered and they make you break it down. I would keep it small. Also, it will make moving it around easier when school lets out or you upgrade to an apartment if you have a smaller tank. A used 14g biocube is a good option. Its slightly large, but not really pushing it.

I have a similar situation. I figured this year I'd like to put one in my suite. They allow us up to 20 gallons.

The 14g biocube sounds like a good idea for both you and I.

How stable is a 14g going to be? What kind of stock can go in it safely? I mean, there is no room for top-notch equipment I am sure. That is my concern.

im still going back and forth between a 14g and a 29g. ill let you guys know what i get. For fish all i really want is a possum wrasse, yash goby/pistol pair and 1 black clown. For corals im thinking about doing an all aussi lps nano. Or maybe a mixed lps dominated nano because i got some rare softies i would like to chop up and put in as well. either way ill keep you guys updated on what happens.
