Come check out the NEW CHAT!!!

Slave to the reef!
There was some debate about the chat rooms we were using, one has its annoying downfalls like whipping sounds and having to press "send" instead of enter when you wanted to to talk. The other had some ads that not everyone found to be "family oriented" and there was also some confusion on how to get it to work. I have found a free java chat that is a lot like Mirc, and its simple to use. I would like everyone input on it. Please keep in mind that it is free so it is far from perfect but is very usable.

What do you guys think.

I guess i should mention if you do /nick yournamehere it will change your nick from visitor to whatever. Ill work on getting some bots setup so we can setup permissions for channel ops and stuff.

And how does that make it easier to use then UserPlane?

To me, this seems like a big step backwards over even the what we're using now. At least with what we are using you don't have to type in your name, nor do you have to remember all of these obscure IRC commands. On top of that, it's ugly as sin.

Not to mention, it has ads (isn't that why we didn't like UserPlane)?

At least with UserPlane you could make the screen as large as you wanted and you could minimize all of the fancy stuff and it was really easy to scroll back through conversations.

My vote is still for UserPlane until something actually better is available.

Ok I was one of the people who didn't like the user plane

Negs for me
Ads: I hate ads pretty girls or not. the blinking flashing crap ticks me off

Needless complicated: All the AV controls and all the extra screens we had it for like two week and most of our users were still "guest"

Speed:Sometimes userplane had a real lag.

For all the features I couldn't get it to make a sound when people replied. I usually open the chat and let it sit .

All in all we had it for like2 weeks and I was only in one decent chat messer chat just seemed to be more user friendly. We had good sized chats right off the bat.

Ultimately its just chat software so I would go with what ever the group decides but that is my two cents

I couldnt get in either. I actually liked the first one the best, I just hit tab space intead of clicking on send. Anything works for me though. Just having a club chat is a luxury.

I liked the first one best. It would be nice if we could hit enter on it though. Is there any other chatrooms out there that are inexpensive? Maybe the club could pay for a better one.

heh ok i tried...make it go bye-bye
i did like userplane, i thought the ads were funny and the program was simple to use, i think this just proves that it doesnt matter what chat program you use, its still gonna be hard for some people to figure out how to use it at first, i mean if my mom can figure it out (love you mom) im sure anyone could.

Lets give true IRC chat a chance....
small learning curve but those of us that know it can help others...

Hers a thought. I am a big time gamer and i use voice chat all the time as i can play and talk without typing to talk at the same time. There are two main clients used for voice chat. Ventrilo and teamspeak. Both are free downloads and are really easy to use. Only things needed are a server (which i currently own three) and a Microphone used to talk. YOu can either buy a headset which i prefer(easier to deal with) or just buy a stand alone mic and speakers which you prolly already have. If we would like to use one of my servers thats is totally fine with me they are pretty cheap anyway and my main one supports up to 125 people at once.
Let me know what yall think of this. Also its connected anytime anywhere just have to have a host name that never changes and all you do is log in like you do in RC. Move tot he correct channel by double clicking and talk thats it.

So, ppl are gonna have to download and install an irc client just to chat? If they couldnt figure out userplane what makes you think they can do that?

if we can't get one that comes up like the current chat theres no point in getting one. People have to be able to click the button and use the chat, no installs, separate servers, etc. This isn't just used by computer savy members, it needs to be as user friendly as possible.

Reefs.org has been very sucessfull over the years with their #reefs chat on mIRC.

Oh well...no worries...we will find something that works.

Thanks for putting it up JB! You won't hear any complaints out of me.

I like that new one a lot, I haven't gotten a chance to talk to anyone on it, but it seems really nice!! You can hit enter and it has a nice big screen. Does it have the private messages feature?
