Concern about my pajama cardinal

I got a pajama cardinal 2 days ago, and I'm getting a little worried.

I floated the bag, with the lights on, because I also was setting up my new skimmer, and needed to see what was going on. I got the skimmer installed, after about an hour, and let him loose in the tank. Right away my Royal Gramma went right at him, nipping at him. I added food to distract the Gramma, and the Cardnial made his escape. He went to the left, back corner of the tank, where there isn't as much rock work as the rest of the tank, and stayed in the middle of the water. I had to really make sure the mysis went RIGHT past his face to get him to eat, but he did eat.

Since that day (saturday), he sleeps in that corner, facing the corner, at the very bottom, and spends all day when the lights are on at the very top, facing the corner, in the same spot. He's right under the filter, about an inch below the water level.

Nitrates are low (less than 20, but not 0), and Nitrites are at 0. ph and Alk is slightly low, I'm working to raise it. Other tankmates include:

2 clowns, a zebra dartfish, the royal gramma, pencil urchin, sally lightfoot crab, nudibranch and various hermits.

He DOES eat, but it takes a lot of effort. I dropped spirulina (sp?) right in front of his face, and he tried to eat it, but the pellet was too big. Dropping both formula 1 and formula 2 pellets near him do nothing. If I can get the mysis to fall RIGHT in front of his face, he eats, but he won't even turn sideways to go for it - he stays right there, staring at his corner. I took the net to try and shoo him out into the tank, and he went out to the middle until the threat of the net was gone, and then returned, same spot.

Is he going to be ok? Is this just a quirky PJ Cardinal thats going to stare all day, but live? Or should I be very concerned he's not venturing out into the tank?

Thanks for any help.

After only two days this guy is probably still trying to adjust to his new surroundings. If he's eating anything that's great. I bought a wrasse recently from liveaquaria that hid in a PVC tube in the quarantine tank for three days before venturing out. It was a week before he started picking at mysis. He still won't eat pellets or any other kind of frozen food, but he's slowly progressing as he gets comfortable.

With time yours should perk up. Those guys are pretty hardy. Read up on quarantine tanks - a simple ten gallon would be your best friend and ease the transition into the 75. It would also give you a chance to make sure that they're 100% healthy. Read some of the ick threads and you'll see what I mean. This could help you avoid reading them later because you have to figure out how to get rid of it. Hope this helps. Good luck...

PJ's are pretty low-key fish. They're nocturnal and spend most of their time floating in one place during the day. They're not like most fish. We have three. My wife thinks they're an eye-sore. They're kinda like secret ninja fish to me.

I had one that would pretty much stay in one spot during the day, and swim around like a maniac at night. They are nocturnal, you can tell a nocturnal fish because they have bigger eyes. Plus, you just introduced him, he's already stressed from being attacked. It doesn't sound like you quarantined this fish before you placed him in your tank. A stressed fish has the potential to become a seriously sick fish. If he is a carrier of anything, being stressed will lower it's immunity and you have a sick tank.

They aren't active, but i love them. He is probably still settleing in. Do you know if he is wildcaught or aquacultured?

I don't know if he's wild or aquacultured, but I got him at PetCo if that means anything. I normally don't buy fish from there, but I saw him and have wanted one for awhile, and decided to go for it.

I've been reading more and more about a QT but I haven't used one yet because I'm not sure how to really go about it. I have a 15 gallon BioCube that isn't in use, and it's filled with water (RO/DI) because I was going to use it as a hospital tank, but couldnt get it going in time. When setting up a QT, should I leave it running all the time, even when nothing is in it? I just wasn't too sure what to do with it in all the downtime it will have between fish.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. I'm hoping that if I take a flashlight to the tank tonight I may see a little more action from my PJ.

Floating the bag in the tank is insufficient to acclimate a new fish to any tank, whether it's your QT tank or the display. Please read about drip acclimation before you purchase another fish.

Every time you put a newly purchased fish in your display tank, you increase the odds of a contagious disease infecting your livestock. A quarantine tank and a hospital tank can be the same thing. Use it to put new fish in a safe environment for four to six weeks while you observe them for signs of illness, get them accustomed to your water conditions, and get them eating a variety of things without the other fish in your display beating them to it. It becomes a hospital tank in the event you need to treat a sick fish with medications or hyposalinity.
