Condy Anemone

Hi,

I just bought a condy anenome from Barrier reef up here in Boca. They told me that it would be okay for my tank and wouldn't be a problem with most fish and corals (unless it walks, but it seems pretty immobile, and I don't have corals right now).

I'm reading on wetwebmedia that they're known to consume small fish (I'm making a small fish only reef tank) and that they eat cleaner shrimp on occasion (I am NOT letting a freaking $5 anemone eat $25 shrimp. I don't know a person who eats $25 shrimp, and there is no way in heck I'll let a damned $5 anemone do it).

Of course I wouldn't have bought it had I known this before hand, but now that I've got it, I would like to sell it for the $5 that I bought it for, or if anyone's got any suggestions on keeping it, keeping it healthy, and keeping my tankmates healthy, I'm very interested on hearing about it.

Thanks,

Eric

If you're keeping small fish, shrimp, or clownfish, my best advice as to keeping it healthy and your tankmates is get rid of it. Damselfish can usually do okay, because they're nasty little suckers, but cleaner gobies will begin to disappear. They have even been known to eat clownfish. They are an atlantic water anemone, not a natural symbiote with any anemonefish which are pacific animals. No clown will live in the Atlantic and no condy will live in the pacific. A general rule of thumb: if they're not friends in the ocean, chances are they're probably enemies. Some condys never get mean and will be very cool with the food you feed them. If you're going small fish, might want to get the anem out. If you're looking for a good anem for slowns or that will usually not eat fish and shrimp, go with the bubble tip, or E. quadricolor(don't know about the spelling, but you get the point). They move around all the time, but hasn't ever harmed my fish. Just keep mushrooms out of it's way.

Maybe this should be a new thread, but...

Lots of people keep anemonies with clowns from different areas... one example, my gold stripe maroon absolutely loved my rock anemone.
