These are very similar corals to be sure. The flame scalloped pattern on the confusa is a distinguishing feature and the more spaced coralites on the spongodes. Both form pinnacles, whorls and plates. Spongodes in my experience are a brighter green under actinics or halides whereas confusa comes in a more olive green or reddish brown.
