Is Acropora valida and the Bali Tri-Color the same coral? What about the Bonsai Tri-Color? or just a regular tri-color acro? Are all tri-colors the same species? What makes one a Bonsai & another Bali?

What species, scientific & common name please, is the tri-color below? sorry for crappy phone pic.

You asking an opinion filled question. Here are my 2cents.

I believe "names" are only of value if they refer to lineage. For example Steve Tyree grew this acro named it Steve Tyrees Whatever Acro(made up name BTW). When i go buy a Whatever acro, it better be from the same colony Steve Tyree has. Other than that i don't care for "names" unless they are in Latin.

So to answer your first question i would call it Valida. A bali tri-color to me is "it came from Bali, and it has three colors". A Bonsai tho i think of G.A.R.F. Bonsai which has lineage. If I bought a Bonsai that that did not come from the folks at G.A.R.F. Then i feel cheated.

Last I would say you have a Valida, a very nice looking Valida. If you want to distinguish it then make you own name up. If it becomes popular and people seek it then people will want to get it from you. It can be as simple as Bela's Vali. If it looks good and other have good luck with it, the coral will speak for itself.

Firstly...is that your picture and what is that stylo or pocci next to the tri colour?

Its not really opinion based...they are either hobby names or scientific names or a place. In the end they are all just tri-colour acros.

A.valida (species) - almost all or maybe all tri-colours are either a.nana or a.valida
bonsai - hobbyist term for tri-colour
bali - a place where the tri-colour may have came from.

There are lots of tri-colours out there so they get called lots of different things.

Jason, thanks for info. I have tri-colors from 3 different sources, so I should keep track which came from where, especially if I frag. I recently traded for corals in Toronto & some had "source/propagator" names which I did not keep track of. I will have to go back and find out. Though Darryl may not agree, coral collectors may value a coral from a specific source more than from an other even though they are the exact same species.

Thanks

Yes it is my (iphone) picture. FYI - that is not the tri-colour I got from you. I believe yours is nicer & has a deeper blue colour. As you know top down shots show more colour then side shots. Your frags shows more & deeper colours from the side then the mini-colony shown above. Thus I would assume if I could take a top down shot of your colony it would look more blue. Hope the BOP & M. palawanensis are doing well.

The awesome yellow with green polyps coral next to the tri-colour is a "Bela's Ultra Nuclear Yellow London Pocillopora" :D
