Controlling ammonia in rotifer culture?

Adding stuff like that to the culture container tends to allow phtyo/rotifers/poop to collect below/in it and become a source of ammonia in itself. It also hinders the flow of the tank. Bare is best in my professional experience.

By the way, Gresham, I've always had trouble with my rotifer cultures before. The combination of IA Shellfish Diet, ClorAmX, and maybe the carboys with small necks to help minimize evaporation and salinity swings (dang dry state) seems to be making it very easy. Thanks!

You'll have even better experience if you use RotiGrow or Rotifer Diet (IA).

I'm not sure if RotiGrow is available to MO breeders as of yet though

I tried live rock in my culture and as Gresham indicated its a pita

Ok I have 2 questions.

1: What is a "Carboy"?
2: Is Amquel reasonably useful as compared to Cloram-X?

1. A carboy is a large glass container shaped somewhat like a 2 liter bottle. They are mostly in 5 gal. sizes, though I have one in 6 gal., too. They are often used for homebrewing beer.

Amquel is fine, you'll just need to figure out what the dosage is though. It won't be the same as for Cloram-X.
