Converting Fluval 5 Gallon into Frag Tank

I am new to this forum and would like some help with a little project I am working on. Currently I have a Fluval 5 gallon tank that me and the fiancé started to see how we could do with saltwater tanks. We have had great success with it for about 6 months now. We have decided to start a 29g biocube tank. I will be setting that tank up today and starting to cycle it. My question is once I transfer all of the animals from the 5 gallon to the new tank, once it is properly cycled, I will have that fluvial tank left over, has anyone successfully used a small tank like that for frags? I am debating buying a whole other setup for a frag tank but if i can get away with using the fluvial tank i would much rather do that. Any thoughts from the more experienced reef and frag tank owners out there?

Sure. As long as you make sure parameters are good and lighting is adequate, I don't see a problem. How is the filtration on those things? If it's not enough for frags, you could always use it as a QT like civics mentioned.

I'm not sure if Petco's $/gallon sale is still going but you could get a 20G frag tank for $20 - although you'll still need the filtration, lighting, etc...

The filtration is very similar to what a Biocube would have. It has a sponge for the carbon and biological filtration to go into and then flows into a second chamber to be pumped in the tank. I thought about going that route but I am completely lost on how to start that process, it seems like it would be a cheaper and easier option but the problem is I am lost on how the filtration would work. I know that hang on filtration doesn't work the best for a reef or frag tank so I wasn't sure what other options I had available to me

I've tried using a biocube 8g as a drag tank is it just didn't work out, the small tanks tend to have swings that stress newly fragged corals.
I had much greater success with a 10g glass tank drilled and dumped to another 10g.
