Convict Tangs

Wondering how these guys do in reef tanks? The tank is 135 gal and has been running for about 18 months. I would love to do one of these fish and have read quite a bit about them, and am curious as to what you all think about them....experiences? Advice?

Great reef fish, also one of the smaller species so will be fine in a 135g, can be kept in small shoals in bigger tanks. Do you have any other tangs? the convict is a pretty passive fish and as a result is prone to be bullied by other more agressive tangs. Other than that mine gets on with everybody eats like a pig and is constantly grazing the rocks, one fish that i think should be more popular than it actually is.

yeah just spotted your reply after posted, just like all fish they each have their own personalities and you never know what its behaviour will be like, until you get it, but generally they aren't usually aggressive. The boss of my tank is a yellow watchman goby and thats including my adult yellow and powder blue tangs.

This will be the first tang. I held off on adding any tangs just to be smart and make sure the tank is mature enough....

since the convict tang is one of the least agressive tangs (if not the least agressive commonly avaliable) this would be the time to add him especially if you are considering adding any other tangs that way he has some time to get established before a more agressieve tang is added(if you do add another tang) i want one but until i set up another tank i cant because of a pwd blue in one tank and a purple in another tank..

I have never had whitespot in my tank, but from what i read up on the convicts they are about as hardy as an acanthurus gets. Although that maybe because people don't notice whitespots on their white coloring :lol:
QT everyfish if possible, keep them well fed and water conditions up and should rarely have a problem with any fish health wise.
