hi i have some old live rock from a friend and this rock has been sitting in stagnant saltwater with only sunlight for quite some time. I heard something about cooking live rock? What should i do?
Stagnant water means it's dead already, there's probably nothing on or in the rock worth saving. I'd bleach it if it were me and start with superwhite rock. I did that on my 20 FOWLR, and it all became 75% coraline encrusted within six months...
I suppose it depends on what "quite some time" means. I'd guess that most stuff dies off in a matter of a month or two without any aeration but I could be way off -- depends on how much rock, how big of a container it's been stagnant in, and how clean it was to begin with.
Regardless, personally I'd bleach it and start anew.
