copepods

Hi everyone. I think i have Planktonic copepods in my tank. It looks like most of them are at the surface and seems as though they are coming out of my filter. They almost look like tiny bubbles but some are cling to the glass. Some say this is a good sign that your water is good and tank is cycled. Can anyone shed some light on this subject for me.

well, yes this is a good thing...if ever you have micropods or copepods this is a good sign. However this doesnt mean that your tank is cycled completly yet. Hpow long has your tank been running and have you checked any of you parameters?

Just because you see copepods doesnt mean your tank is ready for everything, although a good sign!
so before any more advice (im still a newbie as well) telling us your parameters and your tank set up would greatly help!

Copepods are always a good sign (as long as you don't have the bad kind that attack your fish!). If your cycling, you should probably do periodic ammonia, nitrite and nitrate tests. At first, ammonia should be high until some bacteria grow that break it down into nitrite. Then, nitrite will spike until bacteria grow to break it down into nitrate. Once ammonia and nitrite are almost 0 and nitrates are nice and high, your tank is pretty much cycled. I threw in 2 peeled shrimp from my freezer to help it cycle a little faster.

my ammonia and nitrite are both amost at 0 and nitrates are around 20. PH is about 8.2
I don't think these things are attacking my fish, but i can't be sure.

Did you used the shrimp along with fish during cycling

That would be so evil! :blown:

Shrimp and fish to cycle a tank? That is evil! :P
Plz tell me that no one here does that.

Just put in two more heaters and crank them...stir the noodles slowly...then serve with bread rolls or something...

Eric.

As you can see, most of us here are against cycling with "hardy" fish (such as damsels). Using a piece of raw shrimp fromt the grocery store will add a bioload that helps the cycle happen.

Some of us feed the invisible fish as another way of doing this same thing.

Please be kind and do not cycle using live fish.

Thank you.
