If you quarantine a fish with copper how long should you quarantine for? I want to make sure that there are no parasites left.

Hi there.

Depends on the brand you are using i believe. You need to leave you main tank fishless for 4-6 weeks as they are not all dead in there untill then. They are in your sand and rock but can not live without a fish host.

What brand of copper are you using?

HI there.

Okay i have no idea for that product. Does it not say on the back of it?

Can you get your hand on some seachem stuff? I use Cupramine as it is a little easier on fish.

Here is the instructions on the back of there bottle:
DIRECTIONS: Remove all invertebrates. Turn off UV sterilizer; remove chemical filtration. Use 1 mL (top mark of enclosed dispenser) per 40 L (10.5 gallons*) the first day, wait 48 hours, then repeat for a total dose of 0.5 mg/L (in freshwater, use half dose). Leave at this concentration for 14 days. Do not redose without testing (MultiTest: Copperâ"žÂ¢). Do not use in conjunction with any other medication. If tank has ever been treated with an ionic copper (e.g. copper chloride, sulfate or citrate), test copper level after initial dosing. Although most fish tolerate Cupramineâ"žÂ¢ to 0.8 mg/L, it is not advisable to exceed 0.6 mg/L copper. Remove with carbon or CupriSorbâ"žÂ¢.

You need to be carefull with copper as high levels can kill fish. The on ly time i have used Cupramine was when i got my hippo who did not respond to hypo.
Make sure you test for copper levels in your tank before you ad more.

In reality you need to QT at least 4 weeks AFTER the spots have cleared.

Meaning if you have ich and treat for a 1 week that is NOT part of the 'my fish is healthy' QT part. Once the fish shows no more signs of the parasite or whatever you are treating for then start the QT period. If for some reason, on the 4th week you see the symptoms again then you treat and it starts over.
