lfs lady called it a "deer horn" i've not been able to find anything called this or any that look this way. other antler & horn type corals have spikes or thicker/broader stems
oh, to give you an idea of size - this whole piece measures a mere 2" high

any ideas?
thank you all again!

It's not a deer horn, it's an anemone....uh oh wait you mean the pic in the foreground

:D

Interesting, I've never seen anything like it. The great thing about RC, is someone WILL know what it is...be patient, and your answers will come...

Good luck, I am definitely looking forward to what it is.

Hard to tell from that picture. It's either some type of Acropora or some type of Montipora (confusa or digita). Can you see individual polyps on it, or is it flat all over? (If it's flat all over, it may not be a coral at all. There are types of algae that look like branching coral).

If that is a coral, then I would be moving it far, far away from that anemone.

Acropora , Multiacuta,Granulosa, just to name a couple in the genus. At this age it is very diffcult to tell, without an autopsy.
A skeletal view is the best ID

If it is a coral
Is it hard or soft ?
Do little flowers come out ?
Some distichopora look simular if the broad face is flat.
Just another genus to look at

there are no visible polyps it has a mat or flat surface. we are moving it out the high current spot it is in and away from the anemone. thanks for all the help

Sponge - I have the same in my tank.

It's very asymmetrical, so I would have to agree that it's probably a sponge. Sounds like the LFS lady may have just made up a name off the top of her head just to get a sale. Did it actually have a tag/label/price? Or did you notice it in one of the tanks and ask what it was?

YAY! so glad to find out what it is.
another question, if i may....
for those of you who have this type of sponge (trying to do some research now), where will it be happiest?
light - hi / lo ?
flow - hi / lo ?

you all are fabulous! thank you!

xJake -
i saw it in the coral tank and asked about it. she only charges $2 for little frags and individual polyps. i thought it was neat looking, it was all through the tank, so my guess is that it will spread nicely. just 2bits for littles makes this an affordable way to get great pieces and we get to watch them grow/multiply! i have 4 kidlets and we all enjoy the process
