coral reef discovered recent news as of 2/23/06

Actually isn't the discovery of such a place probably a bad thing? It sounds like it has been doing fine all on it's own, and now people get to go mess it up...... hopefully it is too remote for people to realistically visit or want to fish there, let alone build a new dive resort. Maybe a few lessons have been learned and this will be strongly protected, but I'm not too optimistic that at the end of the day the almighty $ will win out.

I totally agree with you michaelg. hopefully it will remain protected. and when i say protected i mean off limits. i know some people say well it should be ok to just look but not touch but boats in the vacinity can damage corals with anchors..etc. also sometimes a fin or something will touch a coral on accident...can be bad. when i was in st thomas i saw lots of huge brain corals (not the fleshey ones...i forget the names...sorry..ya know they are more stoney ) and every single one i saw had large spots of where die off occured. i asked my cousin what it was and he said that mostly when ever hurricains pass through they damage some of the corals...but he also said some are damaged by people fishing or diving when they anchor thier boat. i noticed that everytime we stopped somewhere my cousin would jump in the water grab a line and find a rock to tie it too. he was very concious of not damaging the corals as he has a love for the hobby too. in anycase not too many people around us were doing the same. some were just dropping achor unaware of the corals they were smashing below..sad but a fact.
