Coraline ... Is there a way to tame it?

Okay, so my tank is thriving--- With coralline. All over my glass.. Its just everywhere.. Seems like everyday I scrap it, it comes back with a vengeance.

Also, when I do water changes, it goes crazy and blooms like crazy.

Any way to tame this beast?

ya low ALK and calcium levels will shut it down. but then if you are keeping stoney corals you will not have them

Dude- consider your self lucky, and claim your doing a good job. Coralline is your friend. Buy a blade.

I just got my first SPS- Monti cap. Good size too. I am hoping that absorbs some of the calc/alk levels so the crap doesnt have as much to feed it.

I don't like urchins... they have a pesky problem of getting everything attached to them.. I don't have everything solid since I am not happy with the rock work yet.

I added an urchin to my tank just after cycling and alot of algae. Since adding him and a few crabs, and snails my rock is as clean as if i had bleached them! Coraline is trying to grow but the urchin is eating it as fast as it can grow. I only have specs of coraline on my back glass and a few specks on pumps and such. I have absolutely no coraline on my rock, it still looks as thoughi bleached them and added them as they are completely white and im into my 6th month since startup.

I originally had rocks from a guy that was moving out of state. They were aged rocks probably 3-5 years. Then I had them cycling next to the window, with a 50/50 24'' bulb for 1-2 hours a day for the cycle. I had nothing yet.

Also was cycling the other tank ( the tank I have the problem in . . ) and I had no light on for 8 weeks. The coralline was dying and turning white.

Got my t5 light... Now its everywhere. Plus some algae blooms starting.. gahhh. Razor blade time :D

I actually saw someone selling scrapings on ebay as a "starter" culture.

So, like Eddie said, grab a blade! Then, go sell it!

I used to have a LOT more when I ran my Alk higher. I have to run my Alk low now due to carbon dosing and I still have coralline growth, but its nowhere near where it used to be. Just because you run a lower alk, does not mean you cannot have SPS. Consistency is key.

Get long spined urchins instead of short spined, they won't attach stuff to themselves
