I have a zoas colony that does not spread. I had it for 3 month. all other zoas grow pretty quickly. The colony is on the rock that completely covered with red coraline.
there is a definite war that goes on - chemical most likely - and far more obvious in SPS's. sure the zoas will grow over but they have to expend energy to do so and therefore grow more slowly. with SPS's you can actually watch the 1/4 inch barrior between them as they encrust they kill it back

There is a big difference between coralline and cyano. While cyano will cover live corals normal coralline rarely does. Here is some info from www.melevsreef.com/id
Coralline
As an indication that your water quality and lighting is good, Coralline Algae will grow nicely. It will cover most anything, from Live Rock to snail shells. Seeing tiny dots appear on equipment in my tank, I was so excited to know I had the ratio right. This picture is of the back glass of my tank. You can scrape it off the glass and the chips will 'seed' your tank for more growth. Use a credit card on acrylic to avoid scratches.
Cyano
One of the dreaded algaes we see in our tanks is called "Red Slime Algae" but it is actually Cyano bacteria. Typical solutions: Reduce Nitrates & Phosphates; increase flow; siphon out all you can see with airline tubing. Use a turkey baster to blast this off of sensitive corals, because it will smother them to death. I've never used any chemical "solutions" and usually have it beat in about 3 weeks time.
I have zoanthids growing all over coralline covered rocks. I think there might be some other reason why they won't grow. Try placing the colony that won't grow in another area of the tank with different lighting or flow and see what happens.
