Coraline Question

Ok i know a bit about Coraline algae, we all want it, its pretty etc here is my question, Does it have any impact on Nutrient levels Like chaeto or is it just a "for Looks" thing?

I think I read somewhere that when Coralline covers the rock, then green algae has a hard time growing over it. Almost like a protective barrier.

I know this much what i need to know is does it Absorb Bad stuff Like Nitrates/nitrites out of the water like cheato or does it just absorb calcium?

Nope,

It don't take up nutrients like cheato.
Thanks thats what i needed to know!

It is an encrusting algae and does need nutrients to grow. Saying it doesn't take up nutrients is fallacy. *What* nutrients is debatable. It does utilize a lot of calcium.

Low-nutrient systems have a tough time growing both macroalgae and coraline algae.

It does NOT take up nutrients like cheato.
So you are quite wrong there.
While lighting is important, maintaining excellent water quality may actually be the biggest factor in growing a good crop of Coralline. Like hard corals, Coralline Algae is calcareous by nature, requiring many of the same things corals do in order to flourish:
SG apx 1.024
Calcium
350 to 480 ppm
Carbonate Alkalinity
Between 2.5 and 4.0 meq/L (7-12 dKH)
Strontium
Low Phosphates (Close to Zero)
Low Nitrates (5 ppm or lower)

BTW,look at my gallery,I think I know how to grow coralline.

Might I suggest the same. (red house, though, instead of gallery)

Actually, I will save you the trouble. This photo was taken on the 4-month "birthday" of my tank. It's hard to find a surface that isn't covered in the stuff.

Oh, and I have a refugium as well with lots of chaeto! :)

WOW! That's a lot of coraline for such a short period of time! My new tank has been set up for 3 months and the only coraline i have is a few specs in my sump... UGH!

Wow what do you Dose?? my tank is 6+months old and i dont have hardly ANY coralline algae!

6 months and mine is covered but nothing like that, i have to scrape the sides every couple of weeks or you can't see into the tank for the corraline, but i think my lights are alittle strong. I get corraline everywhere except on top of my rocks, it bleaches out.

I just run 5 X t5's and dose kalk, i just change my lights to something a little colder on the K scale, i kind of like the corraline.

Define colder on the K scale?

Just because coraline is calcerous and therefore needs calcium does not mean it doesn't take up other nutrients. My very first tank was covered in coraline after 4 months, and I can hardly say I knew what I was doing. Believe me, the other nutrients it's absorbing are in your tank, Stingy, so I'm not sure how you can say it doesn't need them. Now, does coraline take up comparable levels of these nutrients to another algae like Chaeto? Probably not, but everything I've read does say it absorbs similar nutrients, such as nitrates and phosphates.

I dose 25ml of B-ionic 2-part every morning (will be switching to homemade 2-part when this runs out). Tank was lit with 4x39w T5s (SuperActinic, AquaBlue, AquaSun and 460) until yesterday. Just installed a new 6x39w Nova Pro. Same bulbs as above, another 460 and a 10k.

Coralline started appearing on the glass at the 1-month mark and has been growing gang busters ever since. In fact, I have to get in there with the scraper this morning before I do my weekly water change. LOL
