Coralline algae

some of my rocks have been turning a light lime green color, is this coraline algae or something that happens before the pink coraline comes or is this a bad thing???

I also raised my calcium to 430 and the alk to 9 dkh and it is really taking off. I don't now if it's actually necessary to raise it that high. I don't have any corals yet. It may just be my imagination.

But it seems like it has. I know I now have to keep up the cleaning of the front and side glass a lot more than before I raised the calcium level.

Someone said to me just recently on this forum, watch what you ask for. Corolline can be a pain to remove.

Regards,

Pat

Cleaning the coraline algae off the the tank can be a pain. I have a deep tank so I invested in the therme algae eliminator and it works well for me. If you keep your parameters consistent you will see the growth.

I have my calcium at about 600. Its going pretty good. I use aquamilk

Isnt that a little to high for calcium?:eek1:

No reason to have your ca that high! I had used Oceanic salt for awhile and my ca stayed too high also around 600. I ended up switching for IO with a little ca bump to 420 and the tank looks much better with better coraline and coral growth. 420 ca and 10 dKh with 1350 mag is a nice balance.

No not really, Ya its high but it won't hurt anything. Its great for SPS's. Thats crazy, I use oceanic, Maybe its not my dosing then. So it could be the salt huh.

Yep! It ran up around 600 when I was using it. Mag was good and alk was really low about 6 or 7. I'd let it drop and don't dose any ca until you're back in the mid 400's. It does no good to be that high. Calcium is only used in calcification at a rate of 18-20 for every 2.8 dKh. And you only have 8-12 of that.

You need at least 5 watts vho per gallon calcium strontium iodine and molybdenum. I use two little fishies by julian sprung bought from www.marinedepot.com around 4.00 per 8.4 oz Give it 6 weeks and you will see coralline take off. all of these items are needed for coral growth also

I was dosing Bionic everyday and the pink coraline was out of control. It even covered the powerheads in no time. I ran into some health problems and for the last 3 months nothing has been added, also have not tested recently. Only a very slight amount of pink is growing, I have some green calcium on the rocks. My stoney corals have declined but the soft corals are growing out of control. I'm also having a nitrate problem which does not respond to water changes. I will be starting a remote DSB soon.
