Go diving in Hawaii. All of the reefs that are off the shoreline anywhere there are hotels, golf course, or developments larger than single family homes are DEAD or DYING/SHRINKING.
At the hotels you will see a literal army of goofs in knee high boots and masks spreading pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides on a DAILY BASIS.
Not to mention the brown or orange runoff of silt that is iron and metal rich that is disturbed from their condo and holiday vacation townhouse community building projects. The silt precipitates metal into the water and the silt covers and clogs the corals that it lands on.
Island populations need to have set limits and construction should only be done if there is a mangrove and or silt settling area developed prior to the runoff hitting the fragile reefs. Basically make all large and small construction project be required to pay a massive tax that will fund manmade areas to control silt and runoff impact.
With the status quo, their reefs will be goners for sure the way they are blindly mismanaging the real threats to their coral dominant ecosystems.
