corals

Does anyone have some overgrown corals that they want to thin out or frag? Have set up a new tank and am looking for new corals. Prefer LPS or brains, torch or frogspawn, want to try some easy SPS. thanks

I just started out with some corals. I got some nice frags from SWR for $10... frogspawn was one. They are growing great so far and extremly happy :)

Thanks for the warm welcome! I have had my tank up and running for about 6 months now... highly addicting! Just bought a 75 that I am planning on doing quite a bit of DIY on, so very exciting! :D

xmenx2dad, and spencewrmoose,
Do you have pics of your corals?
If not, what kind of corals do you have.

A 75 gallon diy spencermoose? I cannot wait to see your build on that, it sounds awesome.

xman, it sounds like we're both liking the lps. I do too. I plan on having mostly lps if I can, with some zoanthids and palythoa.

Okay well, maybe I want some encrusting montipora and a garf bonsai too. :p

I have a colony of green zoos, some aquamarine canycane corals that has about 20 mouths, feather duster, a few mushrooms, and some sort of favia with lime green centers. For fish i have a firefish, lawnmower blenny and my newest acquisition a mandarin. since i have switched to halides, everything seems to be thriving.

Sweet xmen2dad! Your candycane sounds awesome.
I was thinking about a firefish also for my first tank since it will be a smallish tank. Are they fairly hardy? They look so delicate.

I love feather dusters too. Well, I love the pics of them anyway. I wish to get one of them for my future tank. How long have you had yours?

What kind of mushrooms do you have?

And a Mandarin? Wow, when did you get him?

Sorry for all kinds of questions. I'm just very interested is all.

firefish are pretty much indestructible. Mushrooms r some sort of brown with green centers. Got the mandarin at the west side petco. Closet store to me over here in rio rancho paid 15 for him

Regarding the mandarin...wow! At our Petco on the West side?
Okay, perhaps I need to get my rear end to the Petco on the west side. I had no idea they offered anything of that nature.

And that's so good to know, about the firefish. I had just assumed they were a very delicate fish and so this is good news.

Firefish will fight though, I had three originally and two of them ganged up on the third and killed it, then my not-so-reef-safe pistol shrimp ate the other two. :(

I love Mandarins! I'm sure y'all know this already, but lots of them starve to death unless you're a copepod rancher. People talk about 'em thriving on brine shrimp, but that doesn't happen overnight, and it's never happened with me. Without an established copepod population, most Mandarins will starve in a few short months. I think it's a shame that those beautiful fish get sold by people who don't inform customers what they need to eat.

I've had good luck farming copepods from online stock, and I see that copepods are now available in town as well. Gimme a shout if you want some more info.

+1 for ksquared.

Reef Central used to have this on the front page...

I also remember seeing a break down of a questionare that showed the best survival rate on size of tank/amount of rock and if they took to prepared foods. Basically it saidyou really should have at least a 75 that was mature (over 1 year old) and 100lbs of rock netted the best results for "long term survival" (1 year or more). Almost none of them took to prepared foods. On a personal note I had much better results with the Target Mandarin Goby. Was able to live longer than any other Mandarin in a smaller tank. She even took to prepared foods. Lived a little over a year in a 28g. I've also seen people keeping scooter blennies longer term too.
